07 Jul Adv. Jonathan Cartu Reports – The smallest industrial embedded PC in the market!

Editor of sister title EPDT, Mark Gradwell, talked to Joe Davies, Senior Product Specialist at UK-based manufacturer of industrial computers, Amplicon to learn more about their new Impact-P – which they describe as the smallest industrial embedded PC in the market!
Designed and manufactured in the UK, the Impact-P series combines convenience and versatility in a compact, rugged and reliable form factor, offering a powerful set of features not seen before in an industrial PC of its size. Backed with Amplicon’s high-quality technical support, it provides an industrial edge computing platform well suited to applications that demand reliable and intelligent data monitoring, collection, analysis and processing.
Davies said Impact-P came about following requests from customers whose applications needed something even more compact than previous Amplicon embedded computers. “We heard from customers who had tried using commercial grade embedded PCs, such as the Intel NUC (Next Unit of Computing), a small form factor barebone computer kit, in their applications. But they found these commercial computers simply couldn’t cope with the rigours of their industrial applications.”
Such devices are not typically intended for 24/7 operation, which can result in reduced life expectancies. Failure of commercial grade PC systems and components can lead to problems in the field, since they are often installed in inaccessible locations or embedded inside machines. When service engineers have to be sent out to repair or replace them, it then becomes an expensive problem.
Davies continued: “So we designed and created something custom-built to meet the demands of industrial edge computing applications. The chassis is milled out of solid aluminium, ensuring it is robust and rugged enough to withstand harsh environments. Its ultra-small footprint and industrial grade specs – including its wide operating temperature range, DC power options, Intel ATOM embedded processor, and high levels of I/O and connectivity – make it ideal for applications where space and power are at a premium, such as transport, utilities and security.”
Impact-P systems can also be fully customised, with options including DC or PoE powered, dual POE+, multiple I/O configurations, and bespoke branding and even chassis colour.
